Packaging innovation that holds water

A corrugated box that can hold water for a lengthy period without any leakages? It sounds improbable.

Enter Polylam, an innovative packaging concept devised by Nampak Corrugated with fellow Nampak company, Laminated and Coated Products (L&CP).
Polylam is turning the banana packaging industry on its head, says Nampak. The new concept, consisting of a corrugated box with a waterproof polylaminated layer, is providing an effective alternative to traditional waxed cartons.
Suitable for temperatures from 40™  ºC to 80™  ºC, Polylam cartons have potential uses with products as varied as agricultural produce, meat, fish, fresh cut flowers and electronic equipment. It is, for instance, ideally suited to ginger, which can lose one twentieth of its weight in moisture while in transit.
It is currently being tested with frozen chicken and with lettuce.
Initial trials were conducted with bananas, which account for 10,000t of corrugated boxes a year. Bananas are a particularly delicate fruit, which are often not fully dried before packaging and blacken easily if scuffed against rough areas of packaging in transit.
Polylam cartons cope with the moisture of the fruit and prevent scuffing. They also provide protection in high humidity that normally would cause box compression strength to weaken.
Polylam cartons are much cheaper than waxed cartons and are also recyclable, while wax is not. In fact, waxed corrugated boxes are already banned in Germany.
The effectiveness of the new pack has impressed even those closely involved in its formulation. Nampak Corrugated Wadeville team left a sample half filled with water for three weeks. Not a drop of water had leaked from the box, it says.
