The SQFlex system can operate on solar power, wind power, petrol or diesel generator, which means that a user can make the most of local weather conditions while being able to fall back on the generator if necessary. Switching from one power source to another is either done automatically or simply by changing a plug.
The SQFlex options are:

  • SQFlex Solar – a virtually maintenance free and cheap-to-run system. Installation requires no special tools as the solar panels plug straight into the system.
  • SQFlex Wind – equally cost effective and easy to install, this system is suitable for windy regions.
  • SQFlex Combi – combines the solar and wind systems.
  • SQFlex Back-Up – if natural power runs low, both the solar and wind systems can fall back on generator power or batteries.
The manufacturer claims the SQFlex costs less than a windmill installation, making it affordable for farmers, game parks, schools, clinics or community centres.
Manufactured by Grundfos, the SQFlex is an extension of a solar pump, that was developed by the company in the early eighties. The new system has been factory tested in Denmark and trial units have been running in Namibia and the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa since August 2001. Systems are currently in use throughout South Africa and in rural Lesotho, while a big order has been received from Morocco.
GZA (Grundfos South Africa) says maintenance, service back-up and stock is readily available.
