Adag International Plc is opening a cereal, oil seed and spice processing plant – with a capacity to process 75,000t of products a day for export – in Adama, Oromia.
Thecompany has already invested 15m Birr ($811,074) in construction which began nine months ago, and imported 300,000 Birr ($16,221) worth of used machinery from the UK.
Adag International was motivated to open the plant after researching the agricultural potential of the three commodities in the country, and finding that only 23% out of the total 51.3m hectares of arable land is currently in use, according to a 2011/12 Central Statistics Agency annual report. The national yield from this land, for the same year, was 18.8m tons of cereal, 730,880t of oil seeds and 75,000t of spices. The 206 companies engaged in exporting 450,455t of cereals, oilseeds and spices (by adding value to them), earned a total export revenue of $16m dollars. – Addis Fortune
