The Martrac is a small diesel unit with 23 different alternative implements, including a maize mill, vegetable oil press and even a special land mine detonator (for use in Angola and Mozambique).
Its design excludes many of the problems found in conventional tractors. Instead it features are simplicity of manufacture, operation and maintenance as well as versatility and robustness not normally found in small tractors. Priced at around US$12,500, it is within the means of the progressive small scale farmer. A complete system, including implements, requires an investment of less than a third to that of the next suitable unit.
The predecessor of the Martrac, the Tinkabi, was developed in 1970 in Swaziland to meet the agricultural needs of that country. A factory was established in 1975 which had produced and sold 2,500 units all over the world by 1984, when production ceased.
In the late nineties South African engineering firm Marlim became involved, and the tractor was redeveloped with a bigger engine, bigger rear wheels and an extended range of implements.
The basic Martrac tractor now comes complete with 30 H.P. twin air cooled diesel engine, hydrostatic transmission and load tray.
