The ABM Mobile Factories system can be used to fabricate different types of steel buildings such as shopping centres, showrooms, clinics, factories, warehouses, grain and vegetable storage and even cold storage for fruit, meat and poultry. According to the American manufacturer, MIC Industries, a 1,000m² ground-to-ground arch building can cost as little as $17,885, labour and material included. The main component of the system is towed on a trailer to the construction site where self-supporting, corrugated arches from galvanised steel coil are fabricated. The arches are seamed together by an automatic seaming machine into totally waterproof joints. They are either used as a complete building or as a roof over walls, depending on application of the building. The arches can span up to 30 metres clear width without any intermediate support of columns, beams or trusses.
Buildings are erected at high speed: a crew of ten to twelve workers can fabricate and erect nearly a hundered panels in one day. This is one of the main reasons for the cost-effectiveness of the operation, another is the absence of support structures. In addition, transport costs are low as the system is easily transported to remote areas, towed by an ordinary vehicle.
Standard packages for three different mobile units are available. For cold storage and special insulation projects urethane foam is sprayed on either on the inside surface of the arch or in a sandwich form between two layers of steel arches.
MIC Industries sends, as standard procedure, experts for complete on-site training in the operation and maintenance of the equipment and the construction of an ABM building. Technical manuals, data on structural and architectural design, sample designs and ongoing technical support are available to customers.
