Medium mills

Part of the trend of developing scaled-down milling equipment in South Africa has been the production of a medium-sized flour mill by Milltech.

Its Super 20 mill, which typically mills 2t/hour of wheat using six sets of rolls, has the features of a large flour mill, but its price is closer to that of a small mill, Milltech says. The cost of such a mill is about $235,000.
Among the features of the Super 20 are that its rollers are fully automatic and controlled by compressed air. Wheat milling requires the rollers to run against one another in order to achieve the required starch damage. This is not possible if the rollers are not automatically controlled – they will overheat and be damaged if there is no product between the rollers.
Among other features of the Super 20 are:

  • It removes the wheat germ.
  • It operates on a negative pressure system which results in easy product flow, cool operation and minimal wear; the possibility of using wheat with high moisture content; and little condensate or dust.
Milltech also makes medium-sized maize mills.
