Since no electricity is required, there are no operating costs.
A number of models of these low-tech, easy to maintain and long lasting pumps are available and are sold internationally to supply water in areas which are off the power grid.
The main requirement for the operation of a ram is a continuous supply of water. The flow and fall of the water powers the pump, driving a portion of this water uphill.Rife Hydraulic Engine Manufacturing Co of the USA has been manufacturing water rams for over a hundred years, and has 19 different models on the market.
The Rife Ram pumps water from a stream, spring or an artesian well, on a hydraulic principle, and up to 150 meter vertically, providing a continuous supply of water day after day, year after year without interruption.
The pumps are self-starting, require no lubrication or priming and maintenance is limited to changing the rubber gaskets from time to time. Rife rams range in cost from approximately $300 to $7,000.
The company also manufactures other pumps for pumping water without electricity or fuel, like solar pumps, handpumps and pasture pumps. Similar to the ram is the slingpump, which pumps water from flowing streams or rivers and lifts it up to 25 meter vertically. The whole pump unit is set in slow rotation by a propeller, motioned by streaming water at axial level. The slingpump has only one moving part, the swivel coupling, and all parts are non-corrosive. It costs between $450 to $600.
