Amazing Amanzi Systems, backed by Eskom Enterprises, which in turn is part of Eskom, South Africa’s state energy utility, has developed a kerosene/paraffin based system which operates on the Amazing Amanzi trademark principle of Safety, Simplicity, Economy (SSE).
It is a fact that one of the biggest problems in informal/rural housing is the use of unsafe energy appliances such as candles, wick burners etc that burn with open, uncontrolled flames.
According to its developers/marketers, all the Amazing products are safe, simple and economical to use and create many business opportunities throughout Africa. The Amazing System consist of the Universal Paraffin Energy Source (UPES) container which, when pressurised with a simple bicycle pump or car pump, feeds kerosene to a two-plate stove, a water heater, a space heater or any other adapted appliance that is connected to it.
The reason for pressurising the container is to force the kerosene/paraffin through a very tiny nozzle in the primus head, which in turn converts the kerosene/paraffin from a liquid form to a gas form. The main reasons for burning kerosene/paraffin in a gas form is that the process is smokeless. Each appliance can run on its own or both can be used simultaneously. Amazing Amanzi says that this is the first substantial advance in the primus-type kerosene/paraffin-burning technology that was originally patented in the 1930s.
Recent tests by Eskom have shown that kerosene/paraffin has superior heating qualities, on a comparative cost basis, to both liquid petroleum (LP-gas) and electricity. With the Amazing system, one litre of kerosene/paraffin will power the Amazing household appliances for up to four hours. It is estimated that all the energy needs of a family of five can be met with 15 litres of kerosene/paraffin a month, which costs about US$6 – about 50% of the running cost of the same appliance energised by electricity or LP-Gas. The complete system sells for about US$300 in South Africa.
“Besides having the highest known safety standards we also kept the following in mind when developing the unit: Safety, Simplicity and Economy,” says Herman de Vries, MD of Amazing Amanzi.
The UPES-container is fitted with a pressure release valve to prevent over-pressurising as well as a 100-micron filter. The water heater is the first kerosene/paraffin based system with a flame-failure-cut-off valve.
The stove is designed to be stable and sturdy, but should it be knocked over, the flame will be extinguished immediately.
“As kerosene/paraffin-gas is burnt, both appliances are smokeless and more economical than any wick-burner system,” says De Vries. “We were determined to find an affordable, safe and simple energy source for people without electricity. For instance, if we can provide hot water of 70 degrees constantly, most water-borne diseases in Africa can be eliminated. It is estimated that 85% of all infant deaths in Africa are caused by contaminated water.”
Amazing Amanzi is offering dealerships to entrepreneurs who will be trained in both the installations of the units and in business skills. The units themselves also have obvious potential for application in small businesses and in homes.
Currently all the products are manufactured in South Africa but manufacturing and/or assembly plants are planned for some other African states.
