Drinktec, the world’s leading trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry, is hosting its first expo on the Africa continent on 18-19 March 2014 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Organisers Messe München International (MMI) have reeled in their South African subsidiary MMI Africa along with conceptual sponsor, the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), to put on the first Food & Drink Technology Africa (FDT Africa) congress and accompanying exhibition at the Gallagher Convention Centre.
According to Dr Reinhard Pfeiffer, Messe München’s MD, extending the portfolio of Drinktec to Africa, and expanding its range to include foods, is the right and necessary step. “Africa is a market of the future; the continent has enormous growth potential. And FDT Africa will not only be a technological showcase, it will also provide a platform for networking, expertise exchanging and continuing professional development specifically targeted to the needs of the southern African market,” says Pfeiffer. “The focal points will be technologies for safe, hygienic and resource-efficient production and packaging of foodstuffs, liquid food and beverages, as well as existing developments and trends along the entire value-added chain: from raw materials handling, processing, filling and packaging through to logistics.”
Volker Kronseder, president of the Drinktec advisory board, says: “Africa is undergoing a surge in development. Already more than one billion people live on the continent and that figure is expected to be as high as 3.6bn by the end of the century. Beverages and foodstuffs will be produced and consumed in large amounts and that requires technically solid, efficient and reliable machinery and plants. We can provide this. That is why it is important to present our technology to the market at Food & Drink Technology Africa 2014.”
