Cut the cost of long distance phone calls

However, for the smaller company which wants to save on overseas calls, the most practical alternatives are plug-in devices which are used in tandem with PC computers.
These Internet phone devices are not new – they have been used successfully in the US for a number of years. The technology provider provides software and the Internet protocol phone or adaptor is plugged into the user's computer's USB port. The phone call on the Internet is then made via the user's local Internet service provider.
In the past Internet phoning was a complicated matter which needed calls from computer to computer, using headsets or microphones and speakers. By contrast, the plug-in technology allows the use of a normal landline phone without clumsy paraphernalia.
Generally, where the user has permanent access to the Internet (for instance with a wireless connection or ADSL line), overseas calls using this technology will cost nothing if they are to phone numbers in the US, Canada, Asia, Europe, China, Hong Kong, Britain and Australia. However, there are some destination numbers which may not be supported by the gateway.
In one system, offered by Vidicom of South Africa, there is an option between an Internet phone (a specialised handset) which costs about $140 or the use of a standard handset with an adaptor which costs about $150.
