The cooling unit is designed specifically for African conditions where large volumes of drinks are sold on the streets. It costs less than US$285.
MobiCool does not need gas, electricity or solar power. If the lid is kept closed after adding 2kg of ice blocks (or the equivalent in ice bricks) MobiCool’s interior will maintain a temperature of about 5™  °C for 24 hours, due to insulation.
The body and axle and wheels of the unit are exceptionally strong, yet light. The body is made of hot and injection-moulded plastic materials. The interior is made of food-grade materials.
The unit can, for instance, be used for taking heavy goods up and down stairs or through rough terrain.
The 100% maintenance-free unit has been tested by the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Marking. The institute, for instance, tested the unit filled with 75kg of pebbles to simulate travel down steps.
Units are available in 65 litre and 135 litre volume. Innovative Environmental Managers (IEM) which is manufacturing the units (70% of the components come from SA and the balance from Germany), says that the unit is being exported to various countries in Africa.
