The containers are fitted with hot water cylinders, which are heated either by gas or electricity, and are card operated. Swiping the pre-paid card activates the water flow.
The containers, housing six showers each, are tamper proof. The whole container can be locked up at night and individual showers can be secured from the inside for privacy during use.
The first two containers were installed in a township in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2004. Showers for Africa has developed various business options for entrepreneurs and municipalities and will undertake exports across Africa.
A fully fitted container costs around $24,000 (R150, 000).
