This follows the company’s decision to “reach down” to consumers in the lower LSM bands by providing affordable pack sizes aimed specifically at developing and emerging markets.
Besides being small in size and low cost, the pack has the added benefit of ambient stability, a first for a margarine in SA. The product has a shelf life of six months without refrigeration, with obvious advantages for distributors, retailers and consumers in rural and semi-rural areas. The novel packaging has not affected the taste, says UBR. It tastes the same as “normal” margarine, according to the company.
Rama sachets are sold in strip format to wholesalers, which sell them at between R15 – R18 per strip of 12 sachets to spaza shops, trading stores and similar outlets. These shops generally sell the sachets individually.
